Youth Art Program ("YAP" Program)

In The Orchard, in partnership with Youth Resources Niagara, The Wagner Home and DS Horn is primed to deliver an art program geared specifically for troubled youth in the Niagara Region. Recently, In The Orchard introduced a lesson about mosaics that addressed community and respect. Students designed their own piece of art, which later became part of a collective project and lead to a discussion about their roles in the community, respect, government, vandalism and graffiti.

In The Orchard's Youth At Risk Program (YAP) facilitates the development of social skills and learning through sessions that encourage self-expression through various art forms. These sessions are small, personal and non-threatening so to promote verbal and emotional self-expression.

In The Orchard's instructors include a lead certified artist and a Program Assistant through Brock University's Recreation and Leisure Program. Currently, we have eight students attending our programs.

If you or someone you may know might benefit from this type of program, please do not hesitate to contact us!

The following testimonial expresses the benefits of the program and the role that art plays in early development:

"As a future educator having the opportunity to participate with a program like YAP is invaluable. These students seem to just need someone to give them a chance, and it is evident that In The Orchard is providing them with such an opportunity. Each student uses the studio time to conquer that week's struggle, putting all their negative energy into constructing beautiful and amazing pieces of art. I was shocked at how well they managed some of the art projects that Angie has instructed them on, these students are very talented. I spoke with a few of them about their art backgrounds and most of them stated that they dropped their art class in high school because of the teacher. It was a huge 'click' moment for myself as a future teacher, and I realized that too often students are judged negatively and their abilities are limited. At the end of each program the students show their work and they critique each other's positively; it was great to see benefits of not limiting these students to judgments passed and instead building a foundation for future growth. Overall, these students are not only walking away with new perspectives on themselves but also a portfolio of art that could lead to great opportunities, which for them is a gift."
