Growing Together:
A Celebration of Niagara's Migrant Workers
In September of 2011 In The Orchard teamed up with neXt Company Theatre, Brock University and Dignidad Obrera Agricola Migrante (DOAM) to produce a documentary theatre project called Growing Together: A Celebration of Niagara's Migrant Workers. The collaboration represented the second installment of the partnership and the project, which originally mounted "Remember To See The Worker Too" in the fall of 2010. The 2011 project was held at the Sean O'Sullivan Theatre at Brock University and was attended by over 500 members of the community.
The project focuses on sharing the stories of migrant agricultural workers who travel from Mexico, Jamaica and Cuba (and more) to live in the Niagara for 8 months each year to work in vineyards, fields and farms throughout the Region. Some of the workers have been doing this for decades and even second- and third-generation workers within their families. Despite some of the many difficult challenges that they face, the event as a whole retains a tone of celebration, and aims to break social barriers in order for a cultural exchange to take place.
In The Orchard was proud to be a part of such a wonderful project, and continues to be involved with neXt and DOAM for future installments of this documentary project.
Following the documentary theatre event, In The Orchard mounted the puppets that were created for both installments of the project. If you would like to see some of the photos from the process of creating the puppets and / or more photos from the event, please enjoy the photo slideshow below.
